Tarzan on Film

"Tarzan on Film is the result of two decades of exhaustive research on the 98-year ape man cinema canon, one of the greatest and most enduring series in motion-picture history. The 1918 release of the silent-film blockbuster Tarzan of the Apes launched one of history's longest-running and most successful film franchises. Based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' pulp-fiction hero, the tale of the infant orphaned in Africa and raised to manhood by apes has been explored in more than 50 films and seven television series. Writer and historian Scott Tracy Griffin traces the series' development, from the motion-picture industry's early silents and serials, through the high point of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer era featuring Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O'Sullivan, to modern worldwide hits like Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes, and Walt Disney Studios' animated Tarzan."
